Rock Roundup & New Releases for Feb 2

More than 80 of the biggest stars in pop, hip-hop, country and rock came together last night at Jim Henson Studios in Hollywood, California to record a 25th anniversary version of “We Are The World” for Haitian earthquake relief.  (7A) Participating performers include Celine Dion, Wyclef Jean, Carlos Santana, Zac Brown, Barbra Streisand, Lil Wayne, Pink, Kanye West, the Jonas Brothers, Akon, Julianne Hough, Jennifer Hudson, Tony Bennett, Snoop Dogg, Beach BoysBrian Wilson and Al Jardine, Justin Bieber, Toni Braxton, Usher, Josh Groban, actors Vince Vaughn and Jeff Bridges, and others. The video for the new single, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Paul Haggis, is expected to debut on February 12th during NBC’s telecast of the Winter Olympic Games.

All this talk of Aerosmith looking for someone to replace Steven Tyler is not sitting well with Tyler. His lawyer, Skip Miller, has sent a letter to Aerosmith’s manager, Howard Kaufman, asking that the band “immediately cease and desist from engaging in acts and conduct to the harm and detriment of your own client, Aerosmith, and our client who is one of its members… Contrary to all common sense, you are seeing to bring about the replacement of Steven Tyler. Aerosmith without Steven Tyler is like the Rolling Stones without Mick Jagger, or U-2 without Bono. While this management strategy may get the band on the road a few months sooner, it ultimately could destroy Aerosmith.”

A 47-year-old copy of The Beatles‘ first British album is helping the relief effort in Haiti. The vinyl pressing of Please Please Me sold for nearly 22-hundred dollars at auction. It was found in a bag of items donated to the Liverpool office of the British charity Oxfam. Merseyside record store owner Gerard O’Flanagan, who handled the re-sale, says, “When we realized that it was the first album released by The Beatles, and that it was one of the first 300 pressed, we went straight on to our E-Bay account and put it up for auction.”
