Tango into 2012
For 21 years, long before “Dancing With the Stars” put ballroom dancing on the cultural map, dance fans from Hampton Roads have been hoofing in the new year with a weekend of instructional workshops, dances and a gala celebration.
This year’s event will take place at the Sheraton Waterside Hotel, where up to 500 participants of all ages will take part in more than 50 workshops in everything from country-western to Argentine tango.
Saturday night’s gala will feature performances by professional dancers and International Latin bronze medalists Nazar Norov and Irina Kudryashova.
Each night has a theme: Tonight is a dinner dance with exhibitions by amateurs and professionals; Friday is country-western; Saturday is the New Year’s Eve Gala; Sunday is Latin night. Advance tickets are not required for the country or Latin nights, but they are preferred for the dinner and gala.
Donna Campbell of Suffolk is a board member of the host group, USA Dance Tidewater Chapter. She said popular workshops will encompass both American and international dance styles, including theater arts (with fancy lifts), waltz, quick step, rumba, foxtrot, samba, mambo, cha-cha, West Coast swing and others.
