Students can now apply for tuition rebate
GUELPH — College and university students will get a 30 per cent reduction in tuition beginning this semester, and students can begin applying for the tuition rebate today.
“This was a signature piece in our platform during the election and I know many parents are worried about affording university for their children,” Guelph MP Liz Sandals said in an interview. “I’m thrilled to see this in the budget.”
“It would be great if the reductions were for all students but there’s a long list of exclusions,” countered Drew Garvie, communications and corporate affairs commissioner with the Central Student Association at the University of Guelph. “We think two-thirds — about 600,000 students — won’t qualify for this.”
Students could be eligible if:
•They attend full-time at a public college or university in Ontario.
•It’s been less than four years since they left high school.
•They are in a program they can enter directly from high school.
