Notre Dame Football: Preparation for Champs Sports Bowl and Beyond
With Notre Dame's football team ready to start Champs Bowl practices again shortly after a final exam break, I want you to put yourself in head coach Brian Kelly 's shoes for a moment. He's facing what I like to call the modern day dilemma of a major college football coach.
Back when I was growing up the major powers of college football like Alabama, Oklahoma, USC, Notre Dame, etc. did not have to worry about impressing high school recruits and planning for the future.
There were only about 10 bowl games total. You had the major ones like the Rose, Orange, Cotton and Sugar Bowls, respectively. Mixed in with those were the Fiesta, Citrus, Gator, Sun, Liberty, and Peach Bowls.
In those days, the major powers were able to scoop up the vast majority of high school stars and for those that didn't become college stars would remain on the roster as second-, third- and even fourth-stringers. With the advent of scholarship limits, those days have changed.
OK, I know you are saying thanks for the history lesson, but what's Coach Kelly's dilemma? Here it is. With all the bowl games there are today (and I've lost count) a team and their coach can finish 6-6 and still make a bowl and get extra practices. Right, the dilemma, OK, here it is for real.
