Ex-Boynton Beach mayor opposes megachurch moving to mall
&Mdash; A plan by a megachurch to move into a former department store at the Boynton Beach mall has drawn opposition from an unexpected source: former Mayor Jerry Taylor."As soon as I heard of this, I thought of the Bible story where our Lord drove the money-changers out of the temple," Taylor told Tuesday's city commission meeting. "In this case, you're being asked to allow a whole house of worship in the moneymakers' compound."
On Dec. 6, Palm Beach Gardens-based Christ Fellowship told commissioners they had a letter of intent with the owner of the closed, 126,000-square-foot Dillard's store.
It said it would hold services for thousands every week.
Christ Fellowship's main campus is a 300,000-square-foot church on 40 acres on Northlake Boulevard. With roughly 17,000 attending regular weekend services there and at its other locations, it is believed to be Palm Beach County's largest congregation.
The church and its planners are assembling studies of economic impact and traffic and zoning issues. They are set to return to the commission Feb. 7.
