Step, pivot and kick...
Pat Cosgrave, of Feilding, has been line dancing for more than 20 years. LEE MATTHEWS goes in search of big cowboy hats, and finds a group of dedicated dancers.
`One, two, three, four, jazz box with the cross, one, two, three, four, five, six, shuffle seven and eight, side, kick, slide, cross rock, side hitch, sambas, one and two, three and four, sambas, half jazz box, half shuffle, left heel grind, forward rock ... step, pivot and kick ..."
Feilding line dance instructor Pat Cosgrave is with some of her advanced class in the Milson Combined Church hall. The half a dozen women are intent, concentrating, stepping through steps Mrs Cosgrave is chanting.
"And again? Let's go. Step, pivot and kick," she says.
The dancers have had four weeks' break over Christmas and apologise about being rusty. The newbie in this class has been coming for two years; the doyenne for 17. Their feet, clad in jazz dance shoes or soft, supportive sandals, come down crisply. There's an occasional "whoops!" and the patter of steps catching up.
