Senior programs at Ocala YMCA paying big health dividends
But the 57-year-old occupational therapist doesn't think the spring is tucked away in Florida's backwoods or soggy Everglades. Lavery, who is a cancer survivor and was at one time 50 pounds overweight, believes it is as close as the nearest gym.
Lavery is among a growing number of older Americans who are turning to low-impact and flexibility exercises like tai chi to help turn back the clock.
"You want the Fountain of Youth, it's exercise," Lavery said after attending a balance and flexibility class followed by a tai chi class at Too Your Health Fitness in Ocala.
She has been attending a few days per week for the past four years and says it has changed her life.
"It was so bad before that I couldn't turn my neck enough when backing up my car," she said. "Now, I definitely feel I've gained flexibility. I can do things that I couldn't do before."
"It's like yoga, but vertical," Lavery said laughing.
The National Institute on Aging now has said that senior citizen fitness no longer ends with cardiovascular training; muscle and bone strength, flexibility and balance all help to enhance the quality of seniors' lives and maintain their independence.
